Coffee and book talk with Vicky Tiel at Cosi, Bethesda

Last fall I got to interview fashion designer Vicky Tiel whose trendsetting designs caught the eye of Elizabeth Taylor and other Hollywood icons of the '60s including Ursula Andress and Kim Novak She also designed costumes for movies including "What's New Pussycat" and "Pretty Woman".

I was just a little daunted when she suggested a sit-down at Cosi in Bethesda. I soon discovered there was no need.

She couldn't have been more warm and ingratiating. A sharp businesswoman, Tiel was driven to live her life exactly how she envisioned it. "I was born to make dresses," she told me. And she still does. Just yesterday I saw one of her gowns on a show on Bravo. I'm convinced that's why at 68, she still has a youthful twinkle in her eye, a big sense of fun and a terrific sense of style. She was influenced by photographer Irving Penn and during a time of frill and fuss, went for spare, clean lines in her designs.

I already felt like I knew her because I'd done my homework and read her recent book, It's All About the Dress, which reveals so much of her. We talked about men, friendship, sex, growing up in Chevy Chase in the '60s, being a cheerleader, sex, being a geisha, men (read the book). We tried on coats down the street at Snowimage.

Now she's happily married to a (younger) man (remember, "geisha") and creating gowns for the Home Shopping Network. She still has her shop, Vicky Tiel, in Paris. Needless to say, I took in every word, eager to absorb the atmosphere around a woman who manages to retain her youthful energy, power, sexuality and creativity at age 68. Rock stars do it. Vicky does, too.

As we leave 2011 behind and look forward to 2012, I just want to wish my readers all the best in the new year. Most of us ritually make resolutions and I'm hoping that all of you have some dynamic plans and hopes! There's nothing like a fresh start to renew and inspire, whether it's finding your true passion, a great love, a new job, a new business, a terrific book--all ways to help leave a mark on the world.

I'm looking to change up this blog with new eclectic thoughts, sightings and visuals. And finding time to pursue all the things I love most.

Here's to a new start in 2012, bringing in the new and letting go of the dull and rut-like things in our not-so-comfortable "comfort zone". Cheers to all and have a happy, healthy new year!!

Friday Fit: New Year's Resolution = Fitness Done Right

Here we go, New Year’s resolutions. “I will lose 20 pounds.” “I will get sleek, firm arms like Michelle Obama.” “I will run an eight-minute mile.” We say these kinds of things every Jan. 1.

This time, why don’t you seriously, really do it?

If you’ve been slogging around with the same old routine—15 minutes on the elliptical, a weight machine circuit, a class here and there—yawn—maybe it’s time to try something new.

I don’t have a lot of time to wander around a gym trying to figure out what to do or the money to waste on programs that don’t work. At the suggestion of my trainer, Madeleine Watkins, I started taking classes at CrossFit Done Right in Rockville.

As a group of people ranging from military vets to new mothers to middle-aged men, we run, we squat, we stretch, we jump rope, we do pull-ups and sit-ups. Can’t do any of those things? No problem—you work at your own ability and pace with whatever props and help you need. That’s the point. Though the workouts come “as prescribed,” the gym acknowledges the fact that most people require different prescriptions.

You’re in there for you. Want to lift weights and stoke your metabolism? Do it. You won’t be fiddling around with 3-lb padded dumbbells, you’ll be hoisting a barbell with plates. Granted those plates may not be as heavy as the big guy’s next to you, but who cares? It will not only make you stronger and more confident, it will totally blast the fat from your amazed, slacker self before you know it.

And that’s the best part. You won’t feel like a slacker for long. Once the clock for the workout of the day buzzes to start, you’ll feel like a kid on the playground, trying your best to beat it and having fun in the process. Everyone spends a lot of time cheering each other on. Then boom, it’s done, you’ve worked out as hard as you can and it’s time to stretch and go home. Every day is a different workout; there’s not much time for you—or your body—to get bored.

The coaches there, in addition to Madeleine, are certified and top-notch. They’ll help you with nutrition, skills and training and give you individualized instruction. There’s no wasted time and wasted effort. And you’ll love your new body and confidence—both inside and outside the gym.

Midnight at the Mall: Our guest blogger lives to tell the tale

Thanksgiving is one of the few days my friends from home ever feel too tired and full to go out, and so we found ourselves with a Thursday night and no idea what to do. The night quickly took a turn toward the aimless nights of high school, with a group of guys piled into my car and no destination in mind. We headed to the Shell station next to Montgomery Mall—yes that was our best idea—and on our way we noticed cars streaming into the mall parking lot.

“Should we check out Black Friday?” I asked the group.

“Nah, there’s no reason to go.”

“Dude, we’re actually hanging out a gas station.”

After the aforementioned argument quickly took care of itself, we pulled into the mall and miraculously found a spot on the first floor of the jammed garage adjacent to the movie theater. We entered the mall--it was packed. As we walked into the food court, we were instantly brought back to our days of Walter Johnson open lunch: high schoolers were everywhere.

Even so, we took note of the surreal nature of being in a crowded shopping center at 1 a.m. on a holiday. Hollister and Abercrombie had their half-naked models out in full force, and a DJ near one of the cell phone stands was blasting Miley Cyrus for the whole mall to enjoy.

I realized I could pick up some toys for my sister. The gym where she works, CrossFit Done Right, was hosting a 5K race in support of Toys for Tots. After stocking up on Matchbox cars and Batman action figures at Smart Toys, we were back in the food court waiting for my friend Tom to get Chik-fil-A (I guess Thanksgiving wasn’t enough?). While we were waiting--and waiting--I realized that I needed a new pair of jeans. Tom echoed my sentiments.

Our first destination was Old Navy, which promised all adult jeans at only $15 a pair. This was enough to get us into the store, but the line stretched from the cash registers all the way to the back wall. Given the fact that the Old Navy checkout lines are dreadfully slow when the store is empty, I decided that the savings were not worth the time.

Our next stop was American Eagle, which offered 40% off all purchases made before 9 a.m.. This too was attractive, but once again the line was too much for us to handle.

Just as we were ready to leave, I spotted the sale advertisement at Aeropostale: 50% off everything in the store, with an additional 20% off before 9 am. I sped into the store. After some initial puzzlement about whether or not I was looking at men’s jeans, I found a pair that looked good and was roughly my size. It was marked at $49.99, and with the discount and tax they came to about $20, a great deal for good quality denim. As were waiting in line, another friend, Kyle, suddenly decided that the deal was too good to pass up. He went back for a pair and handed them off to Tom with some cash. Kyle needed shoes too, but he decided that DSW on a regular day was cheaper than anything in the mall on Black Friday.

We left the mall feeling satisfied with our purchases. I am definitely planning on returning to Black Friday next year.

The stars come out for Porcelanosa's opening party

When a tile store has a world-renowned chef, an Argentine supermodel and the Spanish ambassador attending the opening party, you know it must be special. And that's after guests were greeted by a four-beam spotlight blazing from the parking lot.

The superstars as well as designers, clients and friends showed up to celebrate Porcelanosa's new location Thursday night on Rockville Pike and Nicholson Lane. The upscale showroom offers cutting-edge flooring and tiles--glass, ceramic, porcelain and stone--that have graced well-furnished homes both here and abroad, including Prince Charles's royal residences. The store also carries luxury bath and kitchen fixtures.

Well-heeled clientele --there was no shortage of Chanel, red-soled shoes and great haircuts--filled the streamlined store and knoshed on authentic Spanish tapas. Most interesting to me were the "liquid olives" served in a spoon. At first I thought they were clams, but the man proffering the tidbits told me to just "put it in your mouth, where it will work its magic." I did as I was told and was greeted with a silky, liquified version of an olive. Delicious.

The guests also included my own kitchen contractor, Eugene Zagoskin of Z&P Construction, who's been working with Porcelanosa for 15 years. Another guest was my son's former volunteer baseball coach, a designer with Kitchen Land. Here are some examples of the kinds of streamlined, European designs you'll find in the new store.

Let it Snow! Apres Ski on the W Hotel Rooftop

Though I was nearly breaking a sweat in my Chanel-esque white wool jacket on a balmy 60 degree night, the Apres Ski Lounge at the W Hotel's rooftop bar last night was a virtual frosty wonderland.

Between the actual skis on the Ski Chalet display, the bright red glittering Ugg boots, the s'mores and the introduction of several new hot toddies, guests were transported to a wintry lodge complete with bright snowy branches, reindeer antlers-and skis.

The fete, put on by Gilt City, was preceded by a media preview of wonderful warm winter cocktails:

We were all treated to amazing views of the White House, the Washington Monument and even the blazing spires of the Air Force Memorial off in the distance. Let it snow!

Driving rains didn't keep the crowds away from the Passport to Style event at The Shops at Wisconsin Place in October. Kelly Collis of Fresh 94.7 emceed the fashion show, which showcased area stores including Bloomingdale's, White House Black Market, Adolfo Dominguez, Eileen Fisher and BCBG. Those BCBG looks were straight off the runway and not available in all stores. Even the dogs donned their Halloween best and enjoyed a night in support of their kind. Patrons could choose from an array of food from area restaurants (sliders, lettuce wraps, cupcakes and more) and wine from The Tasting Room and were treated to a stocked swagbag. All $20 ticket sales benefited either Fashion for Paws and the Washington Humane Society or Hope for Henry.

Awarding Local Creative Talent at the County Exec's Awards

On Oct. 24, The Music Center at Strathmore will present the annual County Executive’s Awards for Excellence in the Arts and Humanities. Best-Dressed Windows in Town and a glimpse behind DRESSED, the film

Don't walk by Ginger in Bethesda Lane without stopping to check out their windows. Always innovative and very clever, they are clearly the best-dressed windows around. I snapped these on designer Thursday during Bethesda Row's Boutique Week. That night we met furniture designer Barclay Butera at Urban Country and then wandered over to Landmark Bethesda Row for a screening of DRESSED.

Afterwards, we met the designer and subject of the documentary film, Nary Manivong and the director, David Swajeski. What I especially liked is that the story shows the power of perseverance and the results of stubbornly following your dreams. Swajeski told me that they are taking it to different schools--most recently in New Mexico--showing it to students to convey the message that no matter how bad it seems, there really is a way out. Manivong was an abused child whose parents finally abandoned him and his siblings when he was 14. He went from living on the streets to designing a collection for New York's Fashion Week--and after a series of mishaps, finally showing that collection. The documentary shows the gritty side of the fashion world and the hard work it takes to succeed. Manivong told me he was inspired by the pictures in magazines and thought, "I can make people look like that." Fashion was also his disguise--his escape--from the brutal reality of his life. As Tim Gunn would say, he certainly "made it work"--in a big way. He has partnered with Ally Hilfiger to form the NAHM line, which launched this fall. The name is comprised of Hilfiger's and Manivong's first and last initials. It means water in Manivong's native Laotian. Here are some snaps from the after-party at Jaleo.

The apex of Bethesda Row Boutique Week events happens tonight when hot designer Barclay Butera appears at Urban Country for a meet-and-greet amid cocktails and appetizers. We'll be there. Afterward, we're heading straight to Landmark Bethesda Row cinema for the Washington premiere of DRESSED, the documentary about designer Nary Manivong's epic journey from homelessness to New York's fashion week. Following the film, the director and designer will be available for a Q&A. Right here, tonight. I don't want to give away any secrets but I'm old enough to remember when going to Bethesda meant a trip to Pines of Rome (still good white pizza) and a shop or two. Now it's all this. Kicking off fall at the District Sample Sale

After a long, hot August waiting for fall, we were sooo happy to get out to last night's District Sample Sale. This event is always fantastic, but this fall's was off the charts. The venue was HUGE; exceptionally excellent nibbles (I was rhapsodizing about the Black and Orange Rogue slider) and deep discounts on clothes to wear NOW. I scored big on shoes. My three pairs really should have been four: At the last minute I found Oscar de la Renta open-toed stilettos that said "lady" but screamed "sex"--and what did I do? Dither, dally and ultimately pass. Don't do that, people. It's never worth it. Those shoes were originally $695. Last night they were $120 at Sassanova--that's exactly two fattening nights out at Rio Grande with my husband. I can make my own Mexican food, but not those shoes!! Another regret--not snagging a beautiful Madison Marcus blouse for $80 that I ogled this summer for over $200 at Emily Grace. Fail.

Okay, enough beating myself up. Here's what I did score: Seychelles black suede booties with hot studs for $25, Dolce Vita dressy, sexy black suede booties for $69 and buttery leather, all-season slingbacks for $50. And, suddenly, my friends and I were all smitten with a $10 tee from Imagine that said Peace, Love and Fashion. Ok, why not? We had shopper madness and it's really cute. We finally paused at that point to have dinner: sushi, baby burgers, gelato and cupcakes. It's almost embarrassing to go on. But I will. There were also tables loaded with brie, artichoke dip, crackers, hummus--all my faves. The DSS was my official fall kick-off event. If you missed it, I hope you know not to let that happen again.

Friday Night ALL ACCESS Fashion Show

Once again, Tysons Galleria was the stage for the ALL ACCESS fashion event, a three-day extravaganza of panel discussions, trunk shows, beauty events and a Friday night runway show followed by a cocktail reception. The event benefits Make-A-Wish, and Mary Frances Wain, vice president of philanthropy for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Mid-Atlantic introduced the show and introduced the young woman whose wish was granted -- a fabulous trip to Paris. Evening gowns were the stars of this show in every style from Hollywood glamour to 80s redux. Bold colors--especially purple--took center stage, while the sheer number of glittering frocks in every color proved that all that glitters doesn't have to be gold....

GiltCityDC launches on Monday, which is inspiring me to wax poetic about my own dear city. The site offers fabulous specials on events and happenings around town. 1. Grab a meal or a happy hour at Mon Ami Gabi;
2. Watch a movie at Landmark Bethesda Row Cinema

Yes, I write about shopping and the stores are fantastic, but honestly, so is the food, and who doesn’t like to eat?

I also love movies, and the theater is right next door to the restaurant, which makes for a perfect place to digest in peace. Plus the films are always fantastic (the arty, indie type Bethesdans love to love).

But first the meal.

Mon Ami Gabi has great steak frites—the best around. The frites are a perfect mix of crispy and tender and come lavishly piled up on the plate next to the steak. They provide the perfect foil to my steak au poivre's subtle spice. The beef is perked up by savory peppercorns with just a hint of sweetness from the brandy in the sauce. The tender butter lettuce salad makes a perfect starter with its dollop of goat cheese. If you’re really feeling decadent, order up a side of creamy cauliflower au gratin—you won’t be sorry. Dessert? This course is why we always came here to celebrate birthdays--the hot, gooey chocolate cake is to die for and profiteroles are too special to pass up. But hey, if you’re an early bird, don’t overlook happy hour. You can get a half-price bottle of wine and appetizers. On Thursday nights there’s live music.

What makes Mon Ami so wonderful is its “adult” atmosphere. The black and white tile and outdoor tables remind me of all the little bistros restaurants lining the upper West Side of Manhattan (thought I was going to say Paris?), which makes me feel like a grown-up and sets the mood for that arty film next door.

Dog days? This is nothing. Get serious. Next month is August and that's when the real thing hits: MidCity's Dog Days of August Sidewalk Sale on August 6 and 7. You need to venture out of MoCo and check out these fabulous stores and restaurants in the heart of our nation's capital. The MidCity (14th and U streets) was home to jazz in the '40s as well as to historical landmarks such as the Lincoln Theatre and Ben's Chili Bowl and made a stupendous recovery from its demise after the 1968 riots.

Friday Bites: We love bbq when J.Dickey is doing the sauce

There's a new kid on the block, or should I say, a new sauce. But you've got to get out to MoCo's Sugarloaf Vineyard Saturday for wine, live music and J.Dickey's innovative take on marinade and grilling sauces. Each jar is homemade and concocted from fresh ingredients. We especially love the "Sunday" sauce, a rich spicy mix and the newest flavor, "Aries," which we use to spice up everything from shrimp to chicken to salmon. But you can't tell from a description. You have to taste for yourself. Plus, it's a great excuse to get out of town and enjoy the countryside tomorrow. Jay himself will be cooking up a storm at noon--brisket, pulled pork, chicken wings, pulled chicken, veggies and salads-- and offering a selection of his special sauces for sale. Here's your chance to try Sweet and Savory (just like the name says), Maryland (a local vinegary blend), Blackberry Habanero (nobody else will have this one at their bbq) and the thick, lucious Beer and Pecan. New Politics and Prose owners Bradley Graham and Lissa Muscatine started their tenure off with a bang last week when musician Josh Ritter came to the bookstore to read from his first novel, Bright's Passage. As I approached the store looking for parking, the swarm of cars moving in and out of the lot sent me back through the neighborhood streets until I found a space. Silly me. I thought nobody would really know about him or that he wrote a book. Wrong. In one of the biggest readings the bookstore has ever seen, Ritter not only read from his book, he asked the audience repeatedly how he was doing and thanked us plebians for being there. Then to help put the book (which is about a WWI soldier and features an angel) into context, he'd pick up the guitar to sing a couple of songs with angels in them. Yes! The audience was rapt. You could have heard a pin drop.

And, in case you don't know Josh Ritter (and that's probably not possible), he never stops smiling. He's like a massive ball of brilliance, creativity, warmth and friendliness all rolled into one incredible human being. Not only did he read, thoughtfully answer every audience question and throw in a literary reference or two or three, he signed books for three hours. EVERY person got a personal greeting, a hug and the trademark grin. And during all of this, he never sat down. So, kudos to all of the store staff and owners for NOT closing shop and putting Ritter on the street--because, yes, he would have stood outside before he let one fan go home with their book unsigned. (One staffer happy to be working overtime for this occasion, said she would be ordering him an after-hours pizza.) And thanks to Josh Ritter for being able to provide so much inspiration and joy to so many people, not only by his music, but also just by his very presence.

And the Fourth comes marching in--and it promises to be a scorcher. I remember our neighborhood block parties with red-faced kids cooling down with giant water guns and adults running in an out of their houses for a sneaky respite from the heat. I'd be wearing some sort of quasi patriotic garb, and praying for snow--and cringing at invitations with the words "picnic" "pool" or "yard" involved. Last night writer Candace Bushnell launched her new book, "Summer and the City"at a fabulous BrandLinkDC event with the pair behind Georgetown Cupcake, Sophie LaMontagne and Katherine Kallinis at the sleek new Residences on the Avenue. Though the sky promised rain, it never delivered and we all enjoyed the views of DC from on top of the new apartment building near GW University. A full bar was done appropriately in Carrie pink, and waiters came around with delicate, little appetizers. I loved the tuna tartare bits wrapped in crispy wonton--they looked just like mini ice cream cones. No details were overlooked--if your makeup needed a humidity check, which it probably absolutely did, there was a lipstick bar by new cosmetics company Nectar Skin to take care of it. Neiman Marcus treated guests to a glimpse inside "Carrie's Closet," on the 3rd floor, complete with a Manolo Blahnik $500 shoe giveaway and Carrie-inspired furnishings by Room and Board. One of the best parts of an event like this is people-watching. I love seeing the fashions, and of course, the shoes. I'd told Ms. Bushnell she'd created this nearly iconic legacy. I mean, really. Where were Blahniks before Carrie Bradshaw ran through the cracked NY sidewalks in them? Though after a while I hated to keep bending down to shoot people's feet, I did try to bring you a roundup of the best. My mind was also wandering thinking what it would be like to actually have "Karen's" closet in my own snappy little Avenue apartment.... Right. Note: if you ever get an invite with BrankLinkDC anywhere on it--go. Just go.

Back to business: AFI's Guggenheim Symposium

Ok, now that I've recovered from my trip to the dark side ("Friday Frivolity") I can get back to serious work. Thursday night I attended the Guggenheim Symposium at the AFI Discovery SilverDocs festival, where I was wowed by the body of work by DA Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus, the honorees and stars of the event. Sen. Al Franken, their subject in "Al Franken: God Spoke" started the show with a series of refreshingly hilarious, self-deprecating remarks. I was dying for him to break into "Stuart Smiley" just one last time, but that milieu didn't lend itself to shout-out requests. He introduced a film compilation of the prolific team's body of work, films about a very young Bob Dylan, Carole Burnett, Al Gore, John DeLorean, Bill Clinton, James Carville. Their films are like poetry in the way that they capture a moment of time--simply as it is, for what it is. No tidy endings, no protagonist appeals to the audience to "like me, like me."

Their next project is a restoration of Richard Leacock's "A Stravinsky Portrait". The filmmaker captures Stravinsky's intensity, passion and the joy he finds in his work just by filming him talk about it. Lululemon Athletica reopens with love

Almost as touching than the crowds thronging Bethesda Lane Saturday morning in a yogic salute to departed colleague and friend Jayna Murray, was the newly renovated store's permanent tribute to her, a stained glass mosaic with the word "love" stretching over the entryway. We liked that the renovation wove her persona and memory so intrinsically into the store's new design. On Saturday morning Adam Pearlstein of Bethesda's Bikram Yoga led a one-hour yoga class and minute of silence to remember Murray, who was slain in the store, in one of most grisly murders Bethesda has seen. Murray's parents were present as the store reopened and though it was hard, they said they were glad they went to see the tribute to their daughter, Jayna. "Today is a day she's doing cartwheels in Heaven," her mother said. Though we were happy to be back shopping at the store on Sunday, we weren't ready to do cartwheels just yet. But we'll get there.

I was all set to post on the wonderful evening I had at the AFI Discovery Silverdocs Guggenheim Symposium last night listening to venerable filmmakers Chris Hegedus and D A Pennebaker ("War Room," "Monterrey Pop") talk about cinema verite, but like a true junkie, I got one look at this and can't stop watching. Really? There are no words. Oh yes there are: "Release me from my cage. I belong on center stage." Um, riiight. I think Hegedus and Pennebaker could have a field day with this one....

Be sure you catch some of the great documentaries at the AFI Silverdocs film festival. It offers so much--symposiums with filmmakers and directors and great films in a really pleasant venue. Not only that, there is ample parking in public lots sprinkled around downtown Silver Spring. I just saw The Swell Season Monday night about folksingers Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova. They starred in ONCE, which won an Academy Award for best original song ("Falling Slowly"). Thursday night is the 2011 Guggenheim Symposium honoring Chris Hegedus and DA Pennebaker, who made "The War Room" about Bill Clinton's campaign and "Al Franken: God Spoke". In fact, Al Franken will be there to speak at the event. This is one of the best film fests around. We loved it last year as well. Don't miss it. silverdocs.com

I'm always in search of the perfect moisturizer for my face and think I've found a keeper in Kiehl's Rosa Arctica cream, a 'youth regenerator' released at Neiman Marcus this March. The Front Row takes center stage starting May 19

Bethesda's biggest and best fashion event returns for three days starting May 19. The Front Row is a spectacular series of trunk shows, book readings, tasty bites from local restaurants, celebrity appearances (PR guru and reality TV personality, Kelly Cutrone, who will be signing her book Normal Gets You Nowhere) and a runway fashion show Friday night featuring Bethesda boutiques. It's all free. So, even if fashion isn't your thing (???) I'm sure your community matters to you. Late-night musings: A lament in the face of progress

Ok, so yesterday I was at LOFT using my 30% family and friends coupon (I love that store) and realizing that these are my last few days for making my traditional rounds through Congressional Plaza as we now know it. Whole Foods is the anchor of Congressional Plaza and the excuse for shopping at LOFT, White House and Last Call Studio. On April 12 Whole Foods closes its doors here and moves down the Pike to the new North Bethesda Market. There have been subtle hints of the closing--my Cajun catfish is no more and neither are my Dr. Krackers. The new store will be closer to me and undoubtedly bigger and dazzling with large displays of prepared foods and produce--but lonely with underground parking. The draw to Congressional is the large outdoor lot, and the opportunity to amble from store to store before finally hitting the bustle of activity in Whole Foods (yeah, remember what walking outside in a suburban shopping center is like?). I love the familiar smell of the store, and yes, the fish guy recognizes me. I have charted a course through the aisles that doesn't deviate too often. I like finally having a "routine" I look forward to. I don't have many. In a town constantly pelted by "progress," growth and change, familiar routines are hard to come by. But I will adapt. Pretty soon, I'm sure the euro-market-style Fresh Market moving into Whole Food's space will seem like it's always been there. And I may finally learn to love parking garages.

Courage for Kids was the beneficiary of Wednesday evening's "Mirror Mirror" event presented by Hela Spa in Chevy Chase. The salon, while no longer affiliated with NYC stylist Ted Gibson, hosted guest speakers Holli Thompson of Nutritional Style and event-planner and personal stylist George Worrell. Each made a presentation as guests enjoyed an assortment of treatments ranging from the latest in nails--Gelish and Minx--to Botox, Juvederm and brow shaping. Guests who donated $20 to Courage for Kids were eligible to receive complimentary treatments. Barefoot Bubbly provided the sparkling beverage, while Sushiko provided, yes, the delicious sushi. We loved hearing about stylist George's journey from homeless man to style maven, his upbringing in Atlantic City and style dos and don'ts. We can't wait to read more in his book, On the Other Side of Style, available on Kindle and Amazon.com. Holli Thompson shared tips and her journey from Chanel to her current career as a nutritional stylist. We also learned that in addition to a physician who provides Botox, Hela Spa now has an acupuncturist available for treatments.

When crime hits close to home

It is with heavy hearts that we post this blog about lululemon athletica in Bethesda. The last time we got to write about the store was a happy and lighthearted occasion--when MoCo Scene was lucky enough to be part of their fashion show last October. Not so today. We want to express our deepest sympathies to everyone at lululemon and most of all, to the families of the beautiful young women who were victims of the brutal attack that took place in the store this weekend. Like many people in Bethesda, we shop at the store frequently. My daughter, a trainer, buys all her workout and training apparel there. We even picked up warm sweatpants for her boyfriend, deployed in Afghanistan, who calls the cheerful staff his "lulufriends." Each purchase was always accompanied by the smiles of these two women and those of the rest of the staff.

These women are part of our daily lives and of course, our community. Their eager smiles, energy and enthusiasm made every trip to lulu special. This event is a sad and horrible reminder never to take those people we meet along the way for granted, and to appreciate all that they give--and gave--us.

Friday Bites: Lunch at Matchbox

This first Friday Bites finds us at the new Matchbox in Rockville. Though I've never been to the one downtown, I have come to this one before for dinner. We loved it for lunch as well.

Without a miss, the chef here knows all about flavor and texture--both stood out in the "mini trio," an appetizer plate of doubles: two scallops, two bunless mini-burgers and two crab cakes. Each teeny was perfectly executed--in seasoning, "just right" doneness and, yes, even petite garnish. The scallops were succulent and fresh; the crispy outside was the perfect foil to the buttery texture within. Mini burgers? A hit with a smear of gorgonzola and a crispy onion topping. And last but not least, the crabcake. Meaty, mild and tasty. With a side salad, this appetizer will be my next meal here.

We had two entrees--the marinated chicken muffaletta on house-made foccacia and the grapefruit salad with a requested portion of salmon. The salmon was dark pink and smooth inside, with a crispy, grilled exterior. But to me, the lettuce was the star of the show. Accented by Marcona almonds, goat cheese and of course, grapefruit, the generous oak leaves remained firm yet butter-lettuce soft, fresh and crisp. The sherry vinaigrette was slightly sweet and tangy and as my daughter said, "incredibly refreshing."

The muffaletta was GIGANTIC--fresh bread held together an olive tapenade, chicken breast, sundried tomato, provolone, chicken and serrano. A little gnome could've been in there, too. Next to this was a pile of crispy homemade "bistro" fries--skinny little waffle chips we devoured.
Score -- 5 stars.

Writer Jill Kargman filled the house last Tuesday at Bethesda's Ginger boutique, as friends and fans gathered to help launch her latest book, Sometimes I Feel Like a Nut, a compilation of nonfiction essays and musings. I went home and read most of the book on the spot--mouth ajar--and feeling like I'd found a soulmate. What? Sometimes you heavily relate to flamboyant gay guys?? ME TOO! (Someone who finally gets Johnny Weir's Balenciaga tree!) You obsess about nail polish colors?? ME TOO! In fact, when I asked her to sign my book, my de facto soulmate pointed to my newly shellacked nails and exclaimed, "Wow! What color is that??!! I'm getting it tomorrow." Plus, and this is big, she had the names "Edward Gorey" and "Tim Burton" on the same page--under "Obsessed." When I was finished studying her impeccably cool outfit (trim lace dress under gray leather jacket, hair in edgy NYC-style bun), I shopped, drank Prosecco and nibbled on goodies from the amazing spread. Chocolate Kisses

I love this nail polish. I discovered the sultry 'Chocolate Kisses' at my standby nail salon Sandy Nails on Old Georgetown Road last winter and got hooked. Though it got mixed reviews from more accomplished polish posters, I find it the perfect mix of warm brown with deep red vamp. I actually saw a car that had the perfect shade--I obsessed till I found a match in 'Decadent Diva' (now 'Decadent Dish'?) Tell me folks, what's in for spring? Essie's "Over the Knee" has some potential. I also love Deborah Lippman's shimmering 'Some Enchanted Evening'. Give me some fresh paint--any great colors/brands out there? And guys, if any of you are reading this, feel free to chime in. I just read about a man who favors Essie's silver metallic 'Loophole' on his toes--at his wife's suggestion.

Confidence! Balance! So are the terms redefined by fashion photographer Terry Richardson in Equinox gym's new ad campaign. When new Chief Marketing Officer Cie Nicholson came on, Terry Richardson's "gritty" fashion shots entered the scene. The press release says "...the goal of the new 'By Equinox' campaign was to blur the lines between fashion, fitness and lifestyle by capturing intimate moments that reveal the benefits of fitness without overtly focusing on the act itself." Um, yeah, those benefits ultimately do accrue. Really, folks! Hot doesn't happen in a flash (excuse the pun). But strong does have its rewards. Bethesda Row's Boutique Week ended with a fashionable bang Friday night at Bethesda's lululemon athletica. The stores' super-fit "ambassadors," a mix of athletes, trainers and even a 2012 Olympic hopeful, strutted the runway in a mix of lululemon apparel--clothes for tennis, running, yoga and more. Customers and clients packed the store to cheer them on and sipped on refreshing peach bellinis courtesy of the W Hotel. In addition to a fabulous show, complete with glittering runway and MC, guests were treated to a goody bag filled with gifts.

Baby shoes, grown-up shoes and Norah O'Donnell signing her bestsellling cookbook, Baby Love , is what was in store last night at Sassanova in Bethesda. O'Donnell of MSNBC co-wrote the book with her husband, local chef Geoff Tracy (Chef Geoff). The book presents healthy, organic alternatives to processed baby foods that the authors say are simple and easy to whip up (they have three children and work all the time so should know). We also loved looking at all the shoes, including the cutest little ones for kids, and meeting Elizabeth Thorp of poshbrood.com and her daughter Isabelle.

Last spring my daughter Maddie and I jaunted to Georgetown to meet designer Shoshanna Lonstein Gruss at Urban Chic's trunk show. Last night we set out for the Bethesda location to see the latest from the designer and visit with fashion blogger Betsy Lowther as part of Bethesda Row's Boutique Week. The dresses were a classic mix of fem with a subtle touch of sexy. Shoshanna doesn't do plunging necklines or slit up-to-there skirts. Her bright florals have more subtle details--off the shoulder, ruching, and gathered skirts. Betsy looked great dressed in a flowered ruched number we all love.

But stay with me...there are two more parts to the story. The Before:

... the fantastic window display we passed at Ginger. We love this dress made of book pages--perfect statement of book + fashion (see my prior Devil Wears Prada post)

and After:

...amazing salad at Sweetgreen. I've already had the "bondi" and "guacamole greens" with shrimp and I love them both. Because I'm a falafel lover I tried out the Chic P... The best. I loved the crunch of the spinach and pita chips combined with soft, warm, spicy falafel. The salad also has roasted yellow peppers, mesclun and chickpeas all dressed with a light tahini/hummus lemon dressing. It was a bowl full of my favorite tastes. The textures worked splendidly as well--not too salty, mushy, hard or crunchy. A home run--especially paired with their deliciously chewy brown bread.

It was a writerly crowd last night at Gretchen Hitchner's Ginger in Bethesda--which would be fitting since owner Gretchen Hitchner is a writer herself, having been a Capitol Hill press secretary before following her passion and getting into the business of fashion. Lauren Weisberger, who combined writing and fashion brilliantly in The Devil Wears Prada, was signing copies of her new book, Last Night at Chateau Marmont, where instead of a young, single protagonist tormented by her ruthless fashion-editor boss, the starring roles go to a young couple struggling with the demands of newfound celebrity and long-term travel on a marriage. Annie Lou Bayly of DailyCandy mingled among the crowd who were sipping wine, buying books and filling up the dressing rooms with the fabulous fall clothes at Ginger.

All Access: Fashion--The Paul Sinclaire Runway Show Redux

Who'd a thunk it?? Wow! A big fashion show like this in a mall--and free? Friday night's All Access: Fashion show of Paul Sinclaire's womenswear line for Saks Fifth Avenue brought out mall patrons, local stars and national celebrities to Tysons Galleria. Patricia Field, award-winning costume designer and stylist for Sex in the City and The Devil Wears Prada, made her entrance, greeting the front row guests (which included Real DC Housewives castmembers), and then took the stage to introduce the show. Though her speech was incredibly short, she was long on star power with her long red hair, cropped bangs, great legs and flanked by style guys with fab studded shoes. The fashion show was a little more reigned in than Ms. Field's entourage, with lots of ruffles and bows, trim A-line skirts, high waists and and bateau necks. The looks had a slightly French and definite ladylike theme. Trousers were neatly cuffed and cropped. Mr. Sinclaire, who has consulted for fashion houses like Dior, sat modestly among the crowd, which stretched up all three levels of the mall. After the show, things loosened up considerably as VIP attendees were treated to a cocktail party, complete with waiters, bars, a silent auction, swag--and lots of photos.

Last year we had a blast with Project Runway's Tim Gunn, the affable host of the inaugural All Access: Fashion event at Tysons Galleria. This year, Sept. 30-Oct. 2, the celebrity host of the runway show Friday night will be Paul Sinclaire, the man who among many other things has consulted with Valentino, Trussardi, Dolce & Gabbana and Dior. He most recently collaborated with Saks Fifth Avenue to create an exclusive fall/winter line of womenswear. Guests may also note another famous face in the crowd: Patricia Field, who styled the looks that made Sex and the City's Carrie Bradshaw, Carrie Bradshaw. And that's just Friday. The 3-day fashion mega-event opens with "The New Rules of Engagement: Luxury 2.0," a lively panel discussion by high-profile industry insiders including Ned Martel of the Post Style section and Aaron Battista, retail VP for 7 For All Mankind. Saturday is a full day of individual runway fashion shows by Betsey Johnson, Nicole Miller, 7 For All Mankind, Anne Fontaine, Karen Millen and B/A/S/L/E/R plus 50 in-store events. While runway seating is invite-only, everything is free and open to the public. The event benefits SOS Children's Villages, an international organization that helps orphaned and abandoned children around the world.

Last Thursday night, people filled up the tent set up at The Shops at Wisconsin Place for Passport to Style. The event drew a fashion-savvy crowd who gave $20 to benefit either Hope for Henry or Fashion for Paws. They were treated to lobster claw bites from Capitol Grille, wine tastings from The Tasting Room, $3 cupcakes from Georgetown Cupcake (who donated the proceeds to Hope for Henry), a fashion show, a swag bag full of samples and discount coupons and much more. All the stores surrounding the tent had their own events as well. Fun!
